CCL CASE STUDIES: SPORTS STRUCTURES

With the 2022 Commonwealth Games drawing ever closer, Birmingham is rapidly rolling out a programme of sports stadium and transport infrastructure improvements. As the region gets ready to deliver one of the most spectacular sporting events in the world, it’s a good time to look back briefly at a few of the sport-related projects CCL has delivered around the world.

Olympic Village - London

CCL was delighted to be selected to provide post-tensioning systems for the £2 bn Olympic Athletes’ Village development which was situated in the Olympic Park.

The development included 11 residential blocks, each made up of five to seven buildings, where thousands of athletes and officials stayed during the London Games. As well as accommodation, it comprised shops, restaurants, medical, media and leisure facilities.

CCL supplied and installed its XF flat-slab bonded post-tensioning system for three of the residential plots. The company was awarded the projects because of its operational experience, technical capability, competitive price and pragmatic approach.

The development objective was to achieve a flat soffit within the tight floor-to-floor heights whilst maintaining a minimal slab depth. The post-tensioned slab solution provided by CCL ensured that the reduced slab thickness specified by the client was preserved throughout the plots.

Wimbledon - London

CCL also played an integral role in the design and installation of structural bearings for the retractable roof on Centre Court at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon.

CCL engineers designed bespoke spin-mounted, guided and fixed uplift bearings to suit this iconic project. The calculations provided by CCL helped to prove feasibility at the early stages of the design. The company's close involvement from concept through to final design and installation contributed to the smooth running of the four-year-long project.

Electrical actuators move the roof trusses apart and stretch the fabric between them until the north and south sections seam over the court. The speed of truss deployment is 214 mm per second.

The ability of CCL’s engineers and its in-house software to cater for the required movement criteria, allowed modification of the designs as the project evolved.

CCL was able to supply the bearings to meet the demanding project schedule and to ensure the project was handed over to the client in time for the first scheduled match.

Meydan Racecourse – Dubai

The Meydan Racecourse in Dubai has a grandstand over a mile in length that can accommodate over 60,000 spectators. The 7.5 million m² racecourse includes Meydan Marina, The Meydan, the world's first five-star trackside hotel with 285 rooms, two race tracks and the Grandstand, which consists of a hotel, restaurants, a racing museum and 72 corporate suites for entertaining throughout the year.

CCL was selected as the preferred partner for all the post-tensioning work on this prestigious project and as such, was responsible for delivering the post-tensioning systems for the hotel, the mile-long grandstand, and the car park.
